Who? Simon Hasan
Simon Hasan designs furniture and accessories using leather. He resurrected a medieval technique of boiling leather, Cuir bouilli, which is then quickly moulded into shape before it hardens.
500 years ago this process was used to make armour. After boiling, once the material has hardened, it becomes stronger than wood. The vases Simon will show are inspired by forms in early aircraft, following a period of research at RAF Halton, where Simon’s father trained as an aircraft engineering apprentice.
‘We find ourselves at a time and place in life when suddenly responsibility is a mainstream issue. The themes in craft are as relevant today as they have ever been.’
Simon graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2008, where he now teaches a new generation of designers.
