Who? Juli Bolaños-Durman
What? Glass objects
Where? Edinburgh, Scotland
Artist and designer Juli Bolanos-Durman was born in Costa Rica and is now based in Edinburgh. Juli’s focus is an eclectic and fresh approach to re-purposing found objects and transforming them into precious artefacts that tell a story. The series was inspired by her grandmother’s collection of perfume bottles, which fascinated Juli as a child. She wanted to explore preciousness and play through the creation of these non-functional vessels.
‘Personality is an important part of what I do. I think of craft as a vehicle for intuitive play, and I like to create joyful pieces, giving old and discarded materials new life with new meaning.’
‘My work is more than just pretty; I don’t believe prettiness solves anything. I do believe that creating space for fun and humour in life is vital.’
Juli is the winner of Jerwood Makers Open 2017, the Elle Decoration British Design Awards 2015: Eco Design Category, and she was awarded Exceptional Talent (Promise) Visa, by Arts Council England.
